Still Stuck in Your Throat

As their first album of new material in more than 6 years, Fishbone’s Still Stuck In Your Throat once again delivers a multifarious sound that bounces around genres with as much energy as the band’s legendary live performances. From speedy, heavy metal hardcore tracks like ‘Let Dem Ho’s Fight’ to the up-beat, ska-flavored plea for peace and less violence, ‘Party with Saddam’ to the 9-minute funky, soulful rock track, ‘We Just Lose Our Minds,’ this album stays in your face from beginning to end.

If the P-Funk Allstars were punks, Fishbone’s sound would be their funk. Most of this album is a blazing cacophony of horns, drums, and distortion with some ruff-neck reggae and off-beat breaks peppered throughout. Though the straight ska sounds of past hits like ‘Ma and Pa’ and ‘Ugly’ aren’t here, the band’s flare for fusing funk, punk, reggae, ska, heavy metal, and a dash of soul into a sound all their own has never been stronger.

If you’re already a Fishbone fan, this album fits as the next step in their growing catalog. If you’re not, it’s doubtful this recording will do anything to change your mind. That being said, the musicianship and production are solid (the brass section is especially tight) throughout all of the frenzied deliveries. The new 7-member line up includes both founding members, Angelo Moore and Norwood Fisher, as well as guitarist Rocky George (Suicidal Tendencies).

Fishbone’s 5-week national tour finds them hitting Freebird Live on 5/01 with another vivacious show that promises to be a furious rock n’ roll ruckus.
