      Christmas in Avondale is this Friday, November 30th! There will be a block party on historic St. Johns with all the shops and restaurants celebrating the holidays. Let them Eat Cake will be set up to sell homemade hot chocolate and marshmallows to go with their cupcakes and other goodies. They have started to offer gluten-free and vegan desserts on Friday and Saturdays.
      Friday is the last day for the Canned Food Drive at the Main Library. All of the canned food will be donated to the Lutheran Social Services Second Harvest Food bank. Call (904) 630-0673 for more information.
      Lots of places have been closing in the past few months—the Preservation Tap and Chophouse is gone now, and so is the more corporate RJ Gator’s. One of the Tree Steakhouses closed down (752 Atlantic Blvd, Atlantic Beach) but there’s still a locale in Mandarin (11362 San Jose Blvd). Aurathai still hasn’t reopened their doors since October, and their voice mailbox has been full for months now.
      For something Christmasy for the kids, head to the upscale Roy’s (2400-101 South 3rd Street, Jacksonville Beach). On Saturday, December 8th at 11 am, they can learn how to make Hawaiian Gingerbread Houses. Cost is $25 per child. Call (904) 241-7697. Want to learn more about entertaining in time for your own cocktail party this holiday season? Hopefully December 9th isn’t too late! On the 9th at 11 am the Williams-Sonoma at the Avenues Mall is holding a free class on the art of entertaining. You’ll learn about the party essentials, guidelines for setting up appetizers, recipes for festive drinks, and yummy food recipes.
      Salt (4750 Amelia Island Parkway, Amelia Island), the chic restaurant at The Ritz-Carlton, has been given “five diamond” status by AAA for the 14th straight year.
